850 Lord Nelson

LN Lord Nelson

Built 1926-29. Designed by R.E.L. Maunsell.

Introduced 1926. Maunsell Lord Nelson design. Cylinders and tender modified by Bulleid from 1938. All were later fitted with multiple-jet blastpipe and large diameter chimney. Classification 6P.

At the time of its completion at Eastleigh Works in 1926, No. E850 Lord Nelson had the highest nominal tractive effort of any express passenger locomotive, namely 33,500 pounds at 85 per cent boiler pressure.

More of the class were then ordered in March 1927 and comprised of ten locos, Nos. E851-E860 for the Eastern Section, being delivered between June 1928 and April 1929. However, it was not long before the class as a whole were also working on the Western Section.
